Introduction of the Information Processing Dept.

Education Concept

 Information system is playing a more and more important role for conducting smooth communications and effective society activities. It has the enormous potential power to change our life deeply, and to affect extremely wide areas. Thus, in order to study the information system well, we should not be limited to the conventional research fields, but rather challenge the interdisciplinary approaches.

 The mission of the Information Processing Dept. is:
 Conducting the education and research about Human Centered Information Science and Technology.

 In our department, we take the fusion of interdisciplinary research subjects, fusion of approaches, and fusion of values about science & technology and human & society as our fundamental policies, in order to promote: 1, comprehensive education & research about human information and engineering technology by taking perspectives of Human Science, Information Technology, Infrastructure System, Measure & Control technology; 2, creative education & research about leading-edge Information System in near future which is convenient to all human beings.

 In order to conduct these merged education & research mentioned before, we employ the leading experts in the following fields as our faculty members:
 1, Information Technology, Human Science and Infrastructure System;
 2, Human Information, Vision & Audition & Sense information processing system, Human Interface, Image & Sound & Brain information, Human Communication, Integration of Multimodal Sensory Information;
 3, Image Processing, Presence Communication, Multimodal Processing, Remote Medical Technology, Network Interface, Super High Performance Parallel Computation, Computer Graphics;
 4, Multidimensional Signal Processing, System-on-a-chip, Security, Neural Network, Microprocessor, Ultrasonography, Actuator, Somatometry.

 Information Processing Department is not for students from some specific area, but for students from extremely wide areas, like Mathematics, Physics & Applied Physics, Electronics & Information, Measurement & Controlling, Mechanics, Chemistry & Applied Chemistry, etc. Based on the fundamentals learned during their undergraduates, students are educated by the unique & new perspective of our department. As a result, they can master the technical knowledge, and the ability to do the advanced research work.

 Numbers of our alumnus are very successful in wide areas of academia & industries after they obtained research & develop abilities based on our new education system. On the other hand, we also aim at training leading researchers in their field. Through lots of supporting measures and the doctoral curriculum, we are making efforts to build the necessary fundamentals to help them stand on their own feet.

 Employers of our alumnus

 Employers of alumnus graduated in Academic Year 2013: Doctoral Program, IBM, NHK, NTT Comware, NTT Data, NTT Docomo, ActiveLink, OBIC, OMRON, OLYMPUS, CAPCOM, Canon Software, KOEI TECMO, Sobal, Sony, Dai Nippon Printing, DENSO, Tokyo Electric Power Company, TOYOTA Industries Corporation, NISSAN Motor Corporation, Japan Oracle, Japan Novel Corporation, Nomura Research Institute, Pioneer, Panasonic Healthcare, HITACHI, Foster Electric Company, HONDA, MITSUBISHI MOTORS, MUFG, RICOH, Japan Patent Office, etc.

Organization of the Information Processing Dept.

Organization

 The Department of Information Processing belongs to the Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Science and Engineering, one of five graduate schools in the Tokyo Institute of Technology. Established in 1975, the Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Science and Engineering was Japan's first independent graduate school without an undergraduate division. It is dedicated to education and research in new areas that transcend traditional frameworks.

 At present, the Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Science and Engineering contains 11 departments. The school is made up of interdisciplinary departments, which are based on the philosophy of developing new interdisciplinary fields in the border areas that span several academic disciplines, and creativity-based departments, which place emphasis on creativity in new scholarly fields and on the doctoral program. The Department of Information Processing is one the interdisciplinary departments and was established in 2005 after the former Department of Physical Information Engineering and Advanced Applied Electronics were reorganized.

 The department has a variety of Program. They are organizationally divided into three broad categories. Core Program are made up of professors with positions in the Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Science and Engineering, external collaborative Program are comprised of visiting professors, and joint Program are composed of professors belonging to research labs and centers on the Suzukake-dai campus. However, there is no difference in the Program in terms of student education and research.

 From the time they matriculate, students belong to the research labs of the professors who manage these Program. They acquire credits from taking classes and receive direction on research projects. Students graduating from the department are either awarded Master's degrees (in Engineering, Science or Philosophy) or doctorate degrees (in Engineering, Science Philosophy).
